IKEA Taper Holder “Hack”

February 5, 2016 Leave a Comment

I can’t believe that it has been 7 months that I have not written one single blog post. What happened? I don’t know… call it writer’s block or just me being lazy. True is, if i don’t have anything interested or worth sharing then why bother, bothering you all! In these past 7 months a lot happened in my house. We have new siding, new landscaping, new mantel and I moved furniture around a lot! So, little by little I will be sharing some details of everything that happened.

Today is a snow day in Connecticut, as a consequence I had to work from home. After a very intense day I had to vent my stress into transforming something old I had into something new. This is my new motto for 2016 by the way.

Last night, I read this post from Apartment Therapy, One Mantel and 3 Stylish Ways. The 3 little taper holders from below, called my attention…. one word came in mind… IKEA! I’ll explain.

I have these black tap holders from IKEA and even though they look awesome in the showroom, I was never sure how to use them in the house. In the table they look weird and so in my new mantel. I knew my new mantel needed some love, but honestly, I wasn’t in the mood to spend time shopping for things that may or not work. When I saw the taper holders above I though, why not give them a touch of golden? So fast forwarding to today, work, stress… I decided I could do this project in less than 10min. I grabbed my taper holders and my left over golden rub and buff and put my hands to work.

  • First, I taped the taper holder with simple tape scotch.

  • Then, using my finger I “rub-n-buff” the top part.

  • I didn’t want it to be too perfect, a little of black showing would give a nice touch to it… so when I got satisfied with the look, I removed the tape and voila. 10 minutes something old become something new!

And in the mantel it looks like this:
